I started running to the grocery store when I was 9 or 10. In my early teen years my dad bought me a stopwatch and I started timing myself as I ran around the block – probably about a mile. I was a member of the high school track team, where I ran 220yds and 440yds on the relay teams—I was faster than average but not fast enough to be really competitive (should have done the 2 mile). My main event turned out to be the triple jump – where I set a high school record.
At West Point, I was on the freshman track team – for my triple jump. Competed for only a year and then did intramural cross-country. At age 32, I started road racing, which I did for three years. I ran my first marathon that year in 3:05. Ran a couple 2:56 marathons over the next two years. Took a 15 year hiatus and focused on wind sailing. In 1997, I returned to running as a participant in Team in Training for the San Francisco Marathon and became hooked on running. A couple years later I began doing triathlons, in addition to road races, and eventually did the Vineman 1/2 Ironman in 2007. In 2008, I gave up triathlons, since I liked the biking and running most, and I started to complement my road racing with duathlons.
I have been an active member of the Forward Motion Race Club for about ten years and the Forward Motion Elite Team for four years. Do most of my training with the team, including participating in the Wednesday night runs at the Forward Motion store in Danville, CA, the Saturday morning club rides, and numerous trail and road training runs throughout the year. I complement my training with spinning classes at the local 24-Hour Fitness.
